Standard Deviations – After Hours / Monk’s Point

0

“Standard Deviations” is a 2-volume collection of the greatest Jazz Standards of all time… reimagined. Tunes deviate into one another, styles deviate into related genres and arrangements deviate from the standard originals. Contemporary jazz musicians bind together blues, funk, fusion, progressive rock, new age, post-bop and smooth jazz, depending on the arrangement. 33 classics arranged into 24 tracks over 2 CDs.

Fabulous blues duet between saxophonist Woody Mankowski and pianist Tobin Mueller. Avery Parish’s “After Hours” begins this medley in classic blues fashion. But the energy of these two players slowly morph the tune into something closer to prog-fusion. Mueller’s channels Thelonious Monk at his height and Mankowski blows the lid off of this piece. There is enough joy and power in this duet sure to satisfy both the blues and jazz lover. The video shows dark barrooms, lonely people, hard times and attentive bartenders… you can almost smell the smoke and hear the glasses clinking. But outstanding musicianship transcends all the dark corners, all the hidden struggles… This is the essence of what makes the Blues so universal. Where blues and jazz meet is a special place where pain is given voice and leaves you smiling, lighter than air. The miracle of music.
