Lady Lazarus is the solo singer-songwriter project of Melissa Ann Sweat, who has earned praise and attention from The New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, SPIN, Fader, Stereogum, Magnet Magazine, and many more for her singular and spirited brand of piano- and keyboard-based “dream folk-pop.”
As Lady Lazarus, Melissa has released three albums, Mantic (2011), All My Love In Half Light (2013), and Miracles (2015), produced numerous music videos, and toured across the U.S. Her new album, Impossible Journey Of My Soul Tonight, will be out on 10/18/19.
Melissa is also a fine artist and creative writer. She has exhibited regionally, and her writing has been published in PopMatters, Dangerous Minds, Skirt! Magazine, Impose, and more.
Originally from San Jose, California, Melissa has lived throughout the U.S. and is currently residing in Santa Cruz County.
With sweet, Grimes-like vocals over ethereal piano and synths calling to mind Lana Del Rey, Lady Lazarus’ lead track to her new album evokes an “intimate empathy that I haven’t really felt before,” as described. The warm, meditative song wraps the listener inside a soothing place as the comforting lines repeat, “I know it feels like, I know what you feel like,” reminding you that you’re not alone in dark times.
