“Scars to Your Beautiful,” one of the songs off Alessia Cara’s debut album, Know-It-All, is massively powerful. With lyrics like “But there’s a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark / You should know you’re beautiful just the way you are / And you don’t have to change a thing, the world could change its heart,” it’s the kind of song that is sorely needed in a world that is all too judgmental.
Such a powerful song deserves a powerful music video, and the new clip from the Canadian singer — who turns 20 today! — more than delivers. The clip stars Alessia alongside a wide cast of people, all of whom have unique stories and all of whom are beautiful in their own way. Transgender people, cancer survivors, and fellow pop star JoJo (sans makeup) take their turns to explain what beauty means to them, and how they’ve worked to overcome society’s narrow ideals.
